Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I find my school?

If your school does not appear in the scatterplot or on the map, be sure you have selected a model type that is applicable to your school (e.g., an elementary-only school wouldn't appear in the High Schools view). Also, check that the filter settings haven’t omitted your school.

What type of device can I use?

To take advantage of all the features the application has to offer, a device with a screen resolution of at least 1024x768 pixels (such as an iPad Mini) should be used to view the Matrix.

Why are certain fields in the comparison table empty when I select my school?

Fields remain empty if they are not applicable for the chosen school, the data are not available, or the data are suppressed based on the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s guidelines.

When using the filters, what does an ! mean?

An ! indicates a filter that is actively affecting the map and scatterplot.

What does Enrollment relate?

Enrollment relates the number of students enrolled at any point during the year, including Pre-K students and students who have been placed by court order in a juvenile facility or full-time residential facility. This enrollment is used to determine the percentage of students by race/ethnicity and program displayed within the Matrix and available for export. (Note that Pre-K students and students in court-ordered placements are not counted in the Student Demographics section on the Attendance page found at www.oklaschools.com via the About Our State, District, or School dropdown.)

How are the Indicator points earned, Value, and Letter Grade connected?

Indicator points earned reflect the school's performance on a specific metric. The values are based on comparing the points earned by a school to the maximum possible number of points that school could have earned (which may vary by school). A school’s letter grade reflects their performance, as reflected by the indicator value, relative to the statewide distribution of like schools (e.g., all elementary schools).

What does each Indicator mean?

Overall:

The “Overall” indicator combines the school's performance on the individual measures (e.g., Absence, Achievement, Graduation / Growth, etc.) into a single indicator summarizing how well the school is performing relative to like schools (e.g., all elementary schools), as reflected by the letter grade.

Achievement:

The “Achievement” indicator relates how well the site is preparing students for the next grade, course or level, either within a single content area or across all content areas. This is reflected by the percentage of points earned for students meeting or exceeding their state-level targets. Composite:

The “Composite” indicator consolidates the site's performance from each of the content areas (ELA, Math, and - if applicable - Science) into a single Achievement measure.

ELA:

The “English Language Arts (ELA)” indicator is based on the average value earned by students meeting or exceeding their state-level targets on the English Language Arts state test.

Math:

The “Math” indicator is based on the average value earned by students meeting or exceeding their state-level targets on the Mathematics state test.

Science:

The “Science” indicator is based on the average value earned by students meeting or exceeding their academic achievement targets on the Science state test.

Growth:

The “Academic Growth” indicator value relates how well sites are supporting students in progressing towards or maintaining mastery of grade-level academic standards in Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) over consecutive years. Composite:

The “Composite” indicator consolidates the site's performance from both of the content areas, ELA and Math, into a single Growth measure.

ELA:

The “ELA” indicator value is based on comparing students' performance on English Language Arts (ELA) state tests between consecutive years. Indicator values range from 0-200.

Math:

The “Math” indicator value is based on comparing students' performance on Mathematics state tests between consecutive years. Indicator values range from 0-200.

Chronic Absenteeism:

The “Chronic Absenteeism” indicator value relates how well sites are lessening the impact of lost instructional time. This is reflected by the percentage of students in good attendance, meaning they are in school 90% or more of the instructional days offered through the school calendar. ELPA Progress:

The “English Language Proficiency Assessment Progress” indicator value relates how well sites are supporting English Learners (ELs) in becoming proficient in the English language. This is reflected by the percentage of ELs that have demonstrated or on on-track to demonstrate proficiency in the English language based on WIDA Access test scores. Postsecondary:

The ”Postsecondary (Opportunities)” indicator value relates how well sites are preparing students for life after high school. This is reflected by the percentage of 11th and 12th grade students successfully participating in at least one opportunity including internships, AP/IB coursework, dual/concurrent enrollment, or career and technical education (CTE) coursework leading to certification. Graduation:

The “Graduation indicator” values relate how well sites are supporting students in graduating with a diploma in 4, 5, or 6 years, as well as overall (Composite). This is reflected by the percentage of points earned and the 4-, 5-, and 6-year graduation rates. More information on Graduation can be found at: Graduation Spotlight Document.

Where is Academic Growth – Science?

Since students don't normally take the state Science test in consecutive years, there is no Academic Growth indicator for Science.

Why do I see unexpected symbols on exported data?

All exported data is in a CSV formatted file which is meant to be read with a character set of UTF-8. Be sure to set the character set on your software to UTF-8 encoding while reading exported CSV files.

What is the Data Dictionary?

The Data Dictionary is a downloadable glossary of all variables included in the Matrix. It can be downloaded as an Excel spreadsheet.
